Structural Health Monitoring
Expert Engineering are experienced in a range of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) tools, technologies and processes from early project phases through to the continued support and maintenance of operating in-service systems.
Benefits of effective Structural Health Monitoring include:
- an increased knowledge of actual in-service loading conditions permitting validation (or otherwise) of assumed design load cases
- building a business case for the extension (or otherwise) of operating life
- investigating the cause of structural failures and aiding the development of repair solutions
- identifying load alleviation strategies
- meeting statutory requirements
System Requirements and Specification
Expert Engineering can assist with the requirements and specifications of SHM systems and the selection, installation and monitoring of the associated SHM sensors and transducers.
Data Acquisition
Expert Engineering can also assist in the specification and downselection of data acquisition and storage hardware to meet the SHM system requirements.
Data Processing, Analysis and Interpretation
Expert Engineering have the knowledge and expertise to process, analyse and interpret SHM data using either 'commercial off the shelf' software or alternatively we can design and develop bespoke software tailored to your own individual requirements.
Training
Expert Engineering have experience compiling and presenting technical training courses on SHM and have presented training courses to a number of organisations around the world including Military Air Forces and Original Equipment Manufacturers.
Modelling Structural Health Data with Artificial Neural Networks
As an alternative to direct structural monitoring using strain gauges, we have also undertaken research at Cranfield University in the modelling of strain time history data using Aritificial Neural Networks for advanced jet trainer aircraft (see report here). Although a rapidly growing technology in the aerospace field, this technique has potentially numerous industrial applications including the energy, manufacturing, transport and oil and gas industries.
